Characteristics of Herding Dogs

The dogs in this category were developed to control large flocks of sheep or herds of cattle. They still retain that ability today, even though most of them never lay eyes on a Merino or Longhorn. Energetic, smart, and serious, they’re big proponents of family togetherness and like nothing better than to see the whole family in the same room so they can keep an eye on them.
Herding breeds are protective of their people and property and make excellent watchdogs. They have a tendency to nip at or bump people, not because they’re mean but because that’s how they’re wired to herd. I remember an Australian Shepherd I had when I lived on a ranch in Colorado; she learned by simple observation that I did not want our cattle in the hayfield. As a result, all I had to do was yell “cow” and she would race to the hayfield to chase them out. Ultimately, the cattle learned too – when they heard the word “cow” they high-tailed it out of the hayfield before the dog would even come!
With firm, consistent training, frequently with the use of dog training collars, these breeds of dogs can learn to behave in a more appropriate fashion. Their intelligence, agility, and activity level make them well suited to dog sports.

How Remote Training Systems Work
From Drs. Foster & Smith Educational Staff
We all want our dogs to be well-behaved, delightful companions. At a minimum, your dog needs to know basic obedience commands, such as sit, stay, come, down, and heel. In addition to being more enjoyable, an obedient dog is a safe dog.
Your training “toolbox” may include a number of traditional tools, such as leashes, chain collars, treats, and toys. While these tools can be very successful while the dog is leashed, their effectiveness may diminish when the dog is off leash. If one of your training goals is to have a reliable dog off leash, one tool to consider adding to your training program is an electronic remote dog training collar.
All remote training systems consist of a handheld transmitter that operates the collar remotely via radio frequency. When a button is pressed on the transmitter, the collar delivers a small harmless electrical sensation to your dog.
Remote trainers offer you many benefits. The biggest benefit is control of your dog while he is off his leash. This off-leash control could be a matter of life and death in cases where your dog is heading for a road, heading for the water, or chasing another animal.
Eventually your dog learns that he is in control of the stimulation he receives. He does not associate the stimulation with you. He associates the stimulation with his behavior. Therefore, he learns to control the stimulation by controlling his behavior. When used properly, the remote trainer helps your dog become less confused and more confident in you and your leadership. In other words, a happier dog!
Remote Training
From Drs. Foster & Smith Educational Staff
Dogs are not dumb. When you are training them they soon realize that you cannot correct their behavior unless you are standing close by. Remote dog training collars make it possible to humanely correct, discipline, and even reward your dog, even at a distance. Remote collars are one of the most effective training tools for professional trainers and individual pet owners alike. Some remote units have a range of nearly one mile!
Remote dog training collars can be used in many situations. Examples are:
- Refusing to come when called (once they know the command)
- Chasing cars
- Chasing other animals
- Digging
- Nuisance barking
- Field Training
They work effectively and quickly, and allow you to distract the dog by breaking his train of thought so he can center his attention on your command. Remote collars will quickly help your dog associate unwanted behavior with an unpleasant sensation. Remote collars are not, as some people believe, a cruel tool. They also will not injure a dog. In fact, when used correctly, the sensation your dog feels from the collar is similar to the sensation you get from static electricity.
In the past, collars only had one stimulation level to choose from. There are now collars available with several levels of stimulation, so you can determine the level your dog needs.
More Dog Training Collar FAQs
1. How do I know which stimulation level is correct?
:Always start with the lowest intensity level and work your way up as needed. You will know when you have found the proper stimulation level when your dog responds to the stimulation with only a mild twitch of the neck, shoulder, head, or perk of the ears. If he yelps upon receiving the stimulation, the intensity level is too high.
2. What is the difference between continuous and momentary stimulation?
Electrical stimulation can be delivered to your dog in one of two ways
:
- Continuous stimulation is a constant period of pulsating stimulation your dog receives until you release the transmitter button. (Most collars feature an automatic shut off, where the continuous stimulation ends after 8 -10 seconds, even if you continue to hold the button down. This prevents you from accidentally over-stimulating your dog.)
- Momentary stimulation (also called “nick” stimulation) is a quick “attention getter” that lasts only for a fraction of a second, regardless of how long you press the button. This stimulation has been described as feeling like an insect bite.
3.. What kind of safety features do these collars have?
Most collars we carry include an automatic shut-off feature, which automatically shuts of the stimulation if the continuous stimulation is being delivered for more than 8 – 10 seconds. There are a few dog training collars that do not offer this feature. Thoroughly review the features of each remote training system before making a decision.
